Tests for Anions

Equipment:

Test tubes
Dropper
Limewater
Magnesium sulfate
Barium chloride
Silver nitrate
Hydrochloric acid
Ammonium molybdate
Ammonia
Cold iron sulfate

Layout as following

Anion

  • Test
  • Result

 

Carbonate

  • Add MgSO4
  • White precipitate formed

Carbonate

  • Add dilute HCl
  • Turns limewater milky

Hydrogencarbonate

  • Add MgSO4
  • White precipitate formed on heating

Hydrogencarbonate

  • Add dilute HCl
  • Turns limewater milky

Chloride

  • Add AgNO3
  • White precipitate soluble in ammonia

Nitrate

  • Mix with cold FeSO4, heat gently
  • Brown ring forms

Sulphate

  • Add BaCl2
  • White precipitate formed insoluble in HCl

Sulphite

  • Add BaCl2
  • White precipitate formed soluble in HCl

Phosphate

  • Add ammonium molybdate heat gently
  • Yellow precipitate forms soluble in ammonia reagent
