Experiment: To test for bulking of sand.
Equipment: flat bottomed cylindrical glass container, water, rod, damp sand, tray.
Method
- Place the damp sand into the container and measure the volume. (D)
- Pour the sand onto the tray.
- Half fill the container with water.
- Put the sand into the container and mix using the rod until fully saturated.
- Measure the height. (d)

Conclusion
Thie experiment shows very clearly that batching by volume can be very inaccurate, if the sand or aggregates are damp. A miscaculation of 32% would have an enormous effect on the strength of the concrete.
