French Oral Tips

One of the important things to remember is that the examiner does not know if you are doing Ordinary or Higher French. Although, they will be able to guess from the answers you give. I would recommend when asked to describe yourself, try to give yourself the best possible chance you can. Don’t wait for the examiner to keep asking questions, you should be confident and try to steer the conversation in the direction you want.

So when asked to describe yourself try to say: “My name is _____. There is five in my family. I’m the youngest in my family but I have one brother called______ and one sister called ______. My brother is ___ years old and my sister is ____ years old. My brother is studying _________ in Cork and my sister is working in America as a _______.”

Not

My name is____. There is five in my family. I’m the youngest and I have a cat. (The examiner will be able to guess which level you are studying.)

***If you have a foreign sounding name and surname like mine, Klara Golez, the examiner will more than likely ask its origins. Along with my two real orals, I also had two practice orals but in all four of them I was asked about my name.***

Remember the examiner wants to try and put you at ease so that you can perform to the best of your ability.

Do not wear anything that you may be asked about, especially if your wearing badges or your school has prefect or student council badges, also if headphones from your mp3 player are draped around your neck be prepared to answer questions about them!

If you may have any tips that you think should also be here, leave a comment at the end of the post and I’ll add them in.

So let’s get started!
