To Prepare and Examine Animal Cells

Please describe this experiment in your own words!

Equipment:

  • Disposable wooden stick
  • Glass slide
  • Cover slip
  • Water
  • Dropper
  • Mounted needle
  • Microscope
  • Methylene Blue Stain

Method:

  1. Using one end of the wooden stick, scrape the inside cheek of the mouth to obtain a sample of cheek cells.
  2. Place sample on a glass slide.
  3. Using the dropper, place a few drops of methylene blue stainĀ  on the sample.
  4. Add a few drops of water to the sample.
  5. Slowly, using the mounted needle, lower the cover slip at an angle, to prevent air bubbles.
  6. Examine the cells underneath low power and then under high power.

The cell appears as shown below.
