Metabolism

As we mentioned earlier, there are two types of metabolism but what are they used for?

R = Reproduction
E = Excretion
N = Nutrition
O
= Organisation
R = Response

Reproduction

How organisims make copies of themselves.
There are two types:

Asexual
Doesn’t involve sex cells (gametes). No genetic mixing and the offspring are identical to the parents.
e.g.
Bacteria, Strawberry plants

Sexual
Involves sex cells (gametes) and mixes the genetic material, (DNA, genes)
It’s the most common type of reproduction in both plants and animals.

Excretion

Release of waste material from the body that is produced by the body, e.g. CO2.

Excretion also keeps the internal conditions of the body constant, read about the liver for more information.

Organs of excretion
Plants = stomata
Animals = kidneys, skin, lungs

Nutrition

How plants and animals get food.
Food is used for:

  • Energy
  • Production of cells (growth)
  • Production of chemicals

Plants are Autotrophs => produce their own food, (through photosynthesis)

Animals are Heterotrophs => get their own food from different places.

All food chains start with a plant which gets its energy from the sun.
Grass => Slug => Robin

Organisation

All living organisms are composed of cells.

Some organisms are unicellular (one celled) organisms, e.g. bacteria

Most organisms are multi-cellular (many celled). The cells work in groups called tissues, which form the organs which form the organism.

Response

How an organism detects and responds to changes in their surroundings.

Animals have a nervous and muscular system.

Plants do not have these systems, instead they detect changes in temperature, light and gravity and grow in one direction or another. These reactions are called tropisms
