Texture

Texture describes how the tunes and supporting harmony are woven into a piece of music.

Monophonic one line of music, solo or unison

Homophonic Melody supported by chords

Polyphonic Two or more independent lines of melody woven together

Our teacher once told us to think of texture as a bar of chocolate. Monophonic is simple and one line – think Dairy Milk! Homophonic has a simple accompaniment – like a Bounty! And Polyphonic has lots of stuff in it, all good on their own but all good mixed together – just like a Moro!

Countermelody A melody playing at the same time as the main melody but contrasting in rhythm

Descant A harmony line above the main melody
