Suspended Timber Upper Floor

Click to see entire Construction Studies category

When a suspended timber floor space increases over three metres, the joists tend to twist under loads which reduces load bearing capacity.

Strutting or Britting prevents this.

Types

  1. Solid strutting
  2. Herringbone strutting

Solid – In line and staggered

  • Small lengths of joists are cut to tightly to fit in between other joists.
  • Can be staggered or in line.
  • Must be at least ¾ the depth of the joists.
  • If it contracts and pulls away from the joists, they lose its support.

Herringbone

  • Two pieces 50mm square which are fixed diagonally between the joists.
  • More expensive but if timber contracts it still supports the joist.
