When a suspended timber floor space increases over three metres, the joists tend to twist under loads which reduces load bearing capacity.
Strutting or Britting prevents this.
Types
- Solid strutting
- Herringbone strutting
Solid – In line and staggered
- Small lengths of joists are cut to tightly to fit in between other joists.
- Can be staggered or in line.
- Must be at least ¾ the depth of the joists.
- If it contracts and pulls away from the joists, they lose its support.
In line Staggered
Herringbone
- Two pieces 50mm square which are fixed diagonally between the joists.
- More expensive but if timber contracts it still supports the joist.
