Rhythmic Features

This refers to the rhythm or beat.
Features include:
- Rubato
- Controlled flexibility of tempo “robbed time” (basically, if you hold a note longer than you should the rest of the bar needs to be shorter to make up the time)
- Ostinato
- A repeated rhythmic pattern
- Syncopation
- Emphasis is on the weaker beat

- Triplets and duplets
- Three notes played in the time of two

- Backbeat
- Emphasis is on the 2nd and 4th beats of the bar

- Changing Time Signatures
- Different time signatures within the same piece
- Dotted Rhythm
- Dotted rhythm adds a lilt to the beat
