Rhythmic Features

This refers to the rhythm or beat.

Features include:

  • Rubato
    • Controlled flexibility of tempo “robbed time” (basically, if you hold a note longer than you should the rest of the bar needs to be shorter to make up the time)
  • Ostinato
    • A repeated rhythmic pattern
  • Syncopation
    • Emphasis is on the weaker beat
    • syncopation

  • Triplets and duplets
    • Three notes played in the time of two
    • triplet

  • Backbeat
    • Emphasis is on the 2nd and 4th beats of the bar
    • backbeat

  • Changing Time Signatures
    • Different time signatures within the same piece
  • Dotted Rhythm
    • Dotted rhythm adds a lilt to the beat
