Sean O’Riada was the first to suggest six distinct regional style of Irish music in his programme ‘Our Musical Heritage’

When discussing regional style, it is important to include many aspects of performance such as ornamentation, variation, tempo, phrasing, instrumentation, phrasing, articulation, dynamics and tone.

Donegal

  • Straight, aggressive rhythm
  • Mazurkas, flings
  • Fiddle
  • Players include Tommy Peoples

North Connaught

  • Swing in the rhythm
  • Emphasis on 3rd note in groups of 4 quavers

West Clare

  • Fast
  • Intricate variation and ornamentation
  • Reels
  • Players inculde Noel Hill, Bobby Casey

East Clare

  • Slow
  • Concertina, Flute, Fiddle
  • Players include Mary McNamara, Tulla Ceilí Band

East Galway

  • Complex Repertoire
  • Easy tempo
  • Little Technique
  • Fiddle and flute
  • Players include Paddy Fahy, Paddy Carty

Sliabh Luachra

  • Area made up of West Limerick, Cork, East Kerry
  • Emphasis on backbeat
  • Slides and polkas
  • Accordian and fiddle
  • Players include Padraig O’Keefe, Julia Clifford
