This refers to the features of the accompanying instruments.

Features include:

  • Descant
    • a harmony line above the melody
  • Dissonance
    • clashing notes, an unnatural sound
  • Consanance
    • natural sounding harmony, pleasant
  • Cadences
    • these occur at the end of phrases and are like musical punctuation marks
  • Pedal notes
    • sustained notes in the bass
  • Drone
    • one note is sustained throughout the whole song and does not neccessarily harmonise with melody
  • Chordal Accompaniment
    • This is acommpaniment based on notes of triads and chords
