Functions of foundations

  • Sustain and transmit all loads from building to ground.
  • Prevent settlement and soil failure.
  • Provide a level bed for building work.
  • Anchor the building to the ground.

Design of foundations

  • Nature of subsoil.
  • Size and weight of building (loads).
  • Subsoil beneath foundations is compressed and exerts pressure upwards. This is called bearing capacity, (kN/m²).
