Form refers to the structure of the music i.e. the pattern and repetition of phrases or sections

Binary Two part (AB, AABB)

Ternary Three part (ABA, AABA)

Sonata Form Large Scale Ternary

A: Exposition (Themes/Ideas stated)

B: Development (Themes developed or new themes introduced)

A: Recapitulation (Original themes return)

A coda (end) and cadenza (solo) are often included as well.

Rondo/Ritornello Form A recurring theme with contrasting episodes (ABACADAEA)

Solo Concerto Popular in Classical and Romantic eras, this is a three movement work for orchestra and solo instrument

Concerto Grosso Popular in Baroque era, this is a work for a small group (concertina) backed by a larger group (tutti)

Symphony Large scale orchestral work, usually four movements

Art Song/Lied Poem set to music

Strophic Same music for every verse (AAAAA)

Programme Music Music that describes a story, picure or mood
