Compound two or more substances combined in a chemical reaction

Mixture two or more substances mingled, but not chemically combined

Octet Rule atoms on reaction tend to reach an electron arrangement with 8 electrons in the outer energy level i.e. Atoms tend to gain or lose elctrons so as to have full outer shell

Valency the number of bonds an element can form when it reacts

  • The valency is usually the number of electrons an atom would need to lose or gain to become stable
  • Group I – 1, Group II – 2, Group VII – 1
  • Transition metals have varying valencies
